Ryan recorded the first version on February 13, 2026, using the Voice Memos app. It went through a bunch of versions after that. The chorus and vocal approach came partly from Dave Van Ronk's version of “He Was a Friend of Mine,” with some of the chords leaning more toward Dylan. The original chorus said “Iraq haunts me still.” By April, “Iraq” had become “She.” A few small changes to the verses followed.
